Chia Seeds!

Have you heard of Chia Seeds? Recently my boyfriend Kyle read the book, “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall. With nothing but rave reviews for the book, he convinced me to read it also. The book explores the life and running habits of a particular Mexican tribe who after an all night party of drinking, smoking and dancing, they wake up and fuel themselves with a granola like mixture called Pinola which consists of ground maize kernels and chia seeds, tossed with herbs. Along with a drink they make called Iskiate also known as Chia Fresca. These super athletes then run 50-100 miles at a time, for pure enjoyment with seemingly no effort. As a frequent user of flax-seed, which I grind and add to everything from soups, oatmeal, and stirfrys, I was curious to how it compares to Chia seeds. Similar to each other, Chia seeds do outshine Flax seeds in more ways than one. With a higher calcium level, lower fat content, and a high level of antioxidants present whereas Flax seeds carry none, you can see how beneficial these little seeds are. Although for the healthiest diet possible, it would still be a good thing to enjoy both Flax seeds and Chia seeds. Once, a main part of the Aztec and Mayan diet, Chia seeds are extremely rich in Omega-3 fatty acid a vital nutrient for our bodies, with two tablespoons at least doubling the amount found in a serving of salmon. A well balanced seed, they have astounding benefits, such as extreme energizing power, improving cardiovascular health,  stabilizing sugars therefore helping diabetes,  aids in weight loss promoting lean muscle, improves mental focus and concentration, many anti-inflammatory properties, detoxifies, provides fiber, protein and is rich in antioxidants. The list goes on, but to sum it all up they are a super food! A fun fact about them, is they retain up to 8-10 times their weight in water. They actually form a bit of a gel after sitting in water or any type of liquid within 5 minutes or so. Therefore  they have many possibilities in which you can enjoy them. After reading how amazing Chia seeds are for you, Kyle and I bought a big bag and have already been playing around with different recipes. One of our favorites is the Chia Fresca. Super hydrating and energizing it is great anytime of the day, especially when you need a pick me up. A simple recipe below, tells how you can enjoy your own Chia Fresca:

Chia Fresca
  • 8 – 10 ounce glass of water
  • 1 tablespoon of Chia seeds
  • 1/4 lime (more depending on taste)
  • splash of agave nectar
In a tall glass, fill with water, add seeds and mix. Let mixture sit for 15 minutes. Then add a good squeeze of lime and a splash of agave nectar. Stir and enjoy!
Another tasty way to enjoy Chia seeds and add even more protein is this yummy Vanilla Almond Chia Pudding. With a tapioca like consistency, it’s a great way to start your morning or  a great energy snack. To reach its full gel like form, this recipe is best made overnight as it needs to sit for at least 6 hours. Follow below for the recipe:
 Vanilla Almond Chia Pudding
  • 2 cups of Vanilla Almond Milk
  • 2 tablespoons of Chia Seeds
  • dash of cinnamon
In a covered bowl or large glass add 2 cups of Vanilla Almond milk and 2 tablespoons of Chia seeds. Add a dash of cinnamon, cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours. Voila! A delicious and healthy pudding!
